Brockport Golden Eagles
SUNY (2-1-1) 5pts
Overall (3-2-1) GF 19, GA 14
Brockport got a big dose of reality Friday night when Plattsburgh clipped the wings of the Eagles blanking them 5-0. They did however manage a tie Saturday night against a struggling Potsdam team 2-2. James Cody scored with 2:01 left in the third to tie things up at 2. This weekend Brockport travels east on I-90 and will visit the confines of The Campus Center on the grounds of SUNY Oswego. Saturday night they take the trip down I-81 and face off with Cortland. After Oswego’s tie last week I feel pitty on the Eagles Friday night, but I am thinking the Eagles rebound against Cortland Saturday.

Buffalo State Bengals
SUNY (2-2-1) 5pts
Overall (3-5-1) GF 35, GA 28
It was sister kissing in Buff State Saturday night as the Bengals and Devils of Fredonia skated to a 6-6 tie. For the second week in a row, Buff State let a 2 goal lead evaporate in the third period. This weekend the Bengals get another lone game weekend when they host Morrisville Saturday. The Mustangs are coming off a huge tie against Oswego, but I like the Bengals.

Cortland Red Dragons
SUNY (1-3-0) 2pts
Overall (3-5-0) GF 27, GA 38
The Red Dragons needed a 4 goal third which included an empty net at 18:49 to close out the pesky Mustangs. The win was the first conference win on the season for the Red Dragons. Cortland will stay home again this weekend as Geneseo and Brockport make the trip. I’m not sure if Cortland can get any more points this weekend either. Cortland has already dropped a 1-4 decision to Geneseo earlier in the year in the SUNYAC Challenge.

Fredonia Blue Devils
SUNY (1-3-1) 3pts
Overall (3-4-2) GF 24, GA 28
It was a wild one down at Buff State Saturday night. Forward Jeff Aonso gave the Devils a 3-2 lead just :08 seconds into the second period, but was short lived as just :18 seconds later Buff State forward Nick Petriello would score his second of three on the night, and the game was on. The Bengals went on to go up 6-3 before Fredonia knew what hit them, but then once again Buff State went into penalty trouble. Fredonia would answer with less then 2:00 minutes left in the 2nd period with another Aonso goal, and the comeback was on for the 2nd time in a week. Fredonia would eventually tie things up at 6 and hang on for the tie. This week Fredonia will face another pesky team in Morrisville. I don’t expect to see the need for another Fredonia comeback in this one.

Geneseo Ice Knights
SUNY (2-2-0) 4pts
Overall (6-3-0) GF 27, GA 24
If there was ever a case for “saving it for the next night” Geneseo really could have used it this weekend. After a 7-2 back shed whooping of the Bears on Friday night, it was the number “0” for Geneseo Saturday. Zero – Zero goals in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd period. Zero- Zero shots on goal for Geneseo in the whole first period. Zero- Zero % chance of winning Saturday night. Zero- The Big Zero to the Geneseo fan who decided to try and steal the Cardinal flag and was met with a fat lip as she ran right into a Plattsburgh fans chest as she tried to run away. The Cards blanked the Ice Knights 0-5 in a game that could have ended much worse for the Knights. The good news? They came up with 2 points on the weekend, bad news is the Central NY SUNYAC teams await the Ice Knights this weekend.

Morrisville Mustangs
SUNY (0-5-1) 1pts
Overall (0-7-1) GF 20, GA 45
Wow was I wrong. I thought last years 5-6 loss to Oswego was a huge statement by the upstart Mustangs, but they did one better this year salvaging a 5-5 tie against the #3 ranked team in the Nation Friday night. The tie caused some big news on the Morrisville Campus, but back in Oswego people are still scratching their heads days later. Cortland needed a 4 goal third period to put down Morrisville 3-6 Saturday night, but a point is a point, especially from Oswego. This weekend the Mustangs travel to the Lake Erie duo of Fredonia and Buff State. It will be tough for the Mustangs to get some points this weekend. Or will someone overlook the Mustangs.

Oswego State Lakers
SUNY (3-0-1) 7pts
Overall (5-1-1) GF 34, GA 21
Well we wondered just how Oswego would respond from last weeks close calls in Fredonia and Buff State, and we surely got our answer Friday night when the Mustangs came to town. Oswego would jump out to an early 2-0 lead only to have Morrisville score 3 straight, including 2 power play goals to retake the lead. Oswego would regain the lead just 2:49 into the third period, just to have Morrisville tie it back up just under 10:00 minutes left in the game. Laker forward Brendan McLaughlin would score on a 5x3 power play goal to give the Lakers a 5-4 lead, and a should be win. Wrong. In heroic fashion, Rob Sgarbossa scored as time ran out to tie the game back up a 5 and send it to overtime. Laker goaltender Chris Hyk had to make a diving save in the overtime session to make sure the Lakers at least received a point. This weekend the I-390 duo of Brockport and Geneseo come to town on a still shocked Laker family. With the way Plattsburgh is playing as of late, the Lakers can not afford to let the gap get any bigger. I expect a Laker sweep.

Potsdam State Bears
SUNY (2-2-1) 5pts
Overall (2-3-2) GF 26, GA 30
Right back in your face. Last week Potsdam was on the giving end of a 7-2 smashing against Morrisville, Friday night however it was Geneseo’s turn to show the Bears what its like going open season on Potsdam routing them 2-7. The Bears were able to at least salvage a point on the weekend tying Brockport Saturday 2-2. Dr. Jerkle or Miss Hyde…which Bears team will show up Saturday? More so, which goaltender? Whoever it is better be ready, because the Cardinals are flying high and fast through the SUNYAC this season. I expect to see a loud Maxy Hall, only to be quieted by about oh, the 5:00 minute mark of the first in a Plattsburgh State win, big win. This weeks Game of the Week.

Game Of The Week
Plattsburgh (6-0-0) @ Potsdam (2-3-2)
Plattsburgh is 7-2 versus the Bears the past 3 years, and when they win, they win big. Over the past 9 games the Cards average nearly 6 goals a game versus Potsdam while giving up less then 2 goals a game to the Bears. This is Maxy Hall however. The Bears always seem to save their best for Plattsburgh, and this year I don’t expect to see any different. However I just don’t think the Bears have enough grit and determination to stop the Plattsburgh speed and skill. Goaltending? Yikes! Scary!! The Bears better hope hunting season ends early, because who ever is in net is sure to get shot at! Ducky better warm up that fork early and often. I’m thinking

2-0 on the weekend as expected, but 40 for 40 saves and back to back SUNYAC road shutouts for the first time ever in Cardinal history is amazing. Hats off to Bryan!!
Princess of the Week
With out a doubt goes to the Geneseo fan Saturday night who thought it would be “fun” to try and steal the Plattsburgh State flag that is flown ever game. The student, whose name we do not have, sat and chatted with Tim “the Flagman” during the 2nd intermission. When Tim got up and walked out of the rink, the Geneseo fan decided to make a run with the flag. Unfortunately for her, the Cinderella story didn’t have a happy ending as she had to come back to retrieve her shoe that fell off as she ran away with the flag. Upon her coming back, the flag was snatched out of her hands by another Plattsburgh State fan. As she turned to run away, she ran right into the chest of another Plattsburgh State fan that was coming to help get the flag back. A busted lip, sore ego, an escorted trip by security and a trip to the Deans office come Monday morning….this ones for you Princess!!
