Brockport Golden Eagles
SUNY (2-0-0) 4pts
Overall (3-1-0) GF 17, GA 7
The Eagles put a whooping on the Ice Knights last week 7-2, but this weekend will be the first real test for the Golden Eagles as they entertain Plattsburgh Friday night and Potsdam in this weeks Game of the Week Saturday night. The Eagles will need their SUNYAC leading goaltender Todd Sheridan and his 95% save percentage to really stand tall.

Buffalo State Bengals

It was a weekend of mixed emotions for the Bengals. Friday night they unloaded 10 goals on Cortland, but then lost a heartbreaker Saturday against Oswego. The Bengals blew a 2-0 lead with just under 2:00 minutes left in the game. Tyler Lyon scored with 1:33 left in the third to cut the Bengals lead to one. The Bengals then committed their 9th penalty of the night with just :19 seconds left in the game still up by 1. Unfortunately for the Bengals, it would only take Ryan Ellis another:06 seconds to even the game up at 2-2. Chris Laganiere then closed the book on another Laker come back win at 3:30 in the over time. Once again, the Bengals found themselves down a man as D’Arcy Thomas committed a 5 minute major hitting from behind penalty, the 10th and 11th penalty of the evening for the Bengals who lead the SUNYAC in penalty minutes. This week the Bengals will need to regroup as they host travel partner Fredonia.

Cortland Red Dragons
SUNY (0-3-0) 0pts
Overall (2-5-0) GF 21, GA 35
The Cortland Red Dragons and coach Joe Baldarotta are off to an 0-3 start in the SUNYAC being outscored 4-18 which includes the 3-10 thumping at the hands of Buff State last week. They did however come back and give Fredonia a tough time, but still ended up on the losing end being shut out 0-2. This week Cortland gets a team that could go either way, the Morrisville Mustangs. Cortland could get their first (and maybe only) SUNYAC win before the half way point. But I have a feeling the Mustangs will give Cortland a run for their money.

Fredonia Blue Devils
SUNY (1-3-0) 2pts
Overall (3-4-1) GF 18, GA 22
Fredonia was able to split the weekend picking up its first points of the SUNYAC campaign. Fredonia looked like they would be down 3-0 to the Lakers heading into the third period until James Muscatello scored with less than a minute remaining in the 2nd. The goal gave a ton of momentum to the Blue Devils who would eventually tie the game at 4-4 just over the half way point in the final stanza. But the dreams of the upset would be short lived as Oswego would score with less than 5 minutes to go to go up 5-4. A last ditch effort almost proved worthy as Fredonia just missed the tying goal with under: 15 seconds left. This week they will travel to travel partner Buff State.

Geneseo Ice Knights
SUNY (1-1-0) 2pts
Overall (5-2-0) GF 20, GA 17
It’s been an up and down year for the Ice Knights and last week was for sure a down as the Knights lost to travel partner Brockport 2-7. While some say the score was not indicative of the game, one has to wonder about the goaltending situation now at Geneseo. We will find out this weekend when Plattsburgh comes to town and will surely put up some shots on goal. The Knights will need solid, if not heroic, goaltending…and to take a quote from the Geneseo Pep Band…they will be “Living on a Prayer”.
Previous Game: L 2-7 Brockport
Next Game: 11/14 Potsdam. 11/15 Plattsburgh
Morrisville Mustangs
SUNY (0-4-0) 0pts
Overall (0-6-0) GF 12, GA 34
Call it a learning experience, call it finding out where you stand, I call it taking to the woodshed. While the Mustangs have got a tad better then last year, discipline is the key to the Mustangs success. While I can’t forsee the Mustangs staying in the game Friday night against Oswego, Saturdays game versus Cortland could be a heck of a game for both teams.

Oswego State Lakers
SUNY (3-0-0) 6pts
Overall (5-1-0) GF 29, GA 16
Wow, what a weekend for the Lakers. 4 points, but all 4 came hard earned. Friday night they had to hold off a surging Fredonia team after being up 3-0 to win 5-4 late in the third. Saturday night, it looked like the Lakers were on their way to a disappointing loss to the Bengals before storming back to score 2 goals in the last 1:33 to tie the game up at 2 before Chris Laganiere scored on the power play 3:30 into the over time period for the 3-2 Laker win. This week the Lakers host Morrisville, a good recipe to get some confidence back into the Lakers, as if they needed anymore.

Potsdam State Bears
SUNY (2-1-0) 4pts
Overall (2-2-1) GF 22, GA 21
You can forget the 7-2 win over Morrisville last week, Potsdam needs to get some much needed points this weekend to keep up the pace and start being considered a contender in the SUNYAC. Friday night they travel to a Geneseo team that will be eager to avenge the 2-7 thrashing they received at the hands of Brockport the previous week. Saturday night they will travel up 390 to the same Brockport team in this weeks “Game of the Week”.

Game Of The Week
Potsdam (2-1-1) @ Brockport (2-0-0)
In what could be a battle for third place, Potsdam will travel to Brockport Saturday evening to face the new Brockport Golden Eagles. For the first time in a while, the Eagles find themselves not only out of the SUNYAC cellar, but sitting tied for 3rd place a few weeks into the season. Coach Dickinson has relied on stellar goaltending from Junior Todd Sheridan who’s 1.33 goals against and 95% save percentage is tops in the SUNYAC. Sheridan has faced nearly 30 shots a game on average. Sheridan is a big reason the Eagles are off to a 3-1 overall start and 2-0 in SUNYAC.
The Bears on the other hand could really use the likes of Sheridan on their team. Sophomore goaltender Rick Miller and freshman goalie Trevor O’Neil haven’t been the answer to the Bears lackluster goaltending performance over the past few seasons. With a 4.13 average combined goals against average and only an 85% save percentage, it’s almost amazing that Potsdam is even tied for 3rd. The Bears are on a 2 game winning streak picking up a win last weekend at Fredonia and then crushing the Mustangs 7-2 Friday night.
Potsdam has not beaten the Golden Eagles since the 2005-2006 season going 0-3-1, and the Bears could really use this game. Call it a hunch but I can see the Eagles extending their winning streak over the Bears one more game. Possibly an overtime thriller.

SUNYAC Player of the Week
Joel Shepard, So, Fwrd Buff State
The sophomore forward from the Buff State Bengals had a hat trick in Buff States 10-3 win over Cortland Friday night. Shepard also added an assist giving him a 4 point night.
Princess of the Week
Kyle Roberts, Jr, Defense, Morrisville
Mr. Roberts decided to play tough guy Saturday night picking up a hat trick in penalties. One in particular, Mr. Roberts decided it would be more fun to slash and take the skates out from the opposing player at the face off before the puck was even close to being dropped. Not sure if he noticed, but this is Division III college hockey, not JUCO.
Mr. Roberts I gladly hand you the first Princess Tierra of the 2008-2009 season. This week we return to the founding fathers of the Princess…Geneseo. Stay tuned.
