Cardinal Hockey Week in Review for week ending 11/17/08
Brockport Recap
Good team defense and a stellar night by Joey Wilson gave the Cardinals a 5-0 win over Brockport this past Friday night. Wilson scored the game winner only 44 seconds into the first period.
Brockport’s Ray Tremblay would take two second period penalties and Plattsburgh would make him pay. Eric Satim and Joey Wilson both scored on the power-play. Wilson’s goal came with 10 seconds left in the period and was a back breaker for the Golden Eagles.
Just to make sure the Eagles didn’t get any funny ideas about a third period comeback, Wilson scored a minute and three seconds into the final stanza. In fact, if you take a quick look at the box score for this game, you will notice that all but one of the Cardinals goals were scored in either the first or last minute of play in a period.
Plattsburgh out shot Brockport 41-21 and went 3 for 9 on the power-play.
Bryan Hince picked up his first shutout of the season, making 21saves.
Brockport may not be the most talented team in the league, but they are a hard working team. I guess the question is, are they a playoff team? I think so. Hell, if Morrisville can tie Oswego 5-5, I see no reason why Brockport can’t knock them off. They do have that Cardinal factor working for them. Brockport’s Jason Gorrie, Dave McNab, and Ryan Silveira all used to be Cardinals and we all know Plattsburgh owns the Lakers.
First Star: Joey Wilson
Second Star: Dylan Clarke
Third Star: Bryan Hince

Geneseo Recap
Geneseo loves to play Plattsburgh State. It is the game they look forward to playing most each season.
In the first period, the only Knight that was ready to take on the Cardinals was goaltender Jeff Pasemko. The Cardinals out shot Geneseo 18 to 0 in the first. That’s right, the Knights did not get one shot on Hince in the first period. Thank God for the Genny student band, otherwise Hincey may have fallen asleep back there. Despite one of the Cards best offensive periods of the season, they only managed to score once. The team’s leading scorer Nick Rolls picked up his second goal of the season at 9:31 of the period. Pasemko kept his Knights in the game.
Not sure what was said in the Knights locker room between periods, but Geneseo played a much better second period. They out shot the Cards 13-8 in the period. To be fair, most of those shots came on the four power-play the Knights had in the period. Bryan Hince stood tall and made some big saves on the penalty-kill and the Cardinal played excellent defensively.
The first goal can be the hardest one to score. Kyle VanderMale has had his chances this season and was finally able to convert on one of those chances in the second period at Geneseo. Vandy’s first goal came after serving a two minute penalty for interference.
Geneseo kept it 2-0 until the 11::18 mark of the third period. Dylan Clarke picked up his fifth goal of the season and gave the Cards the all important three goal lead. Then the flood gates sort of opened. Only 26 seconds later Kyle Taylor scored his first as a Cardinal and it was lights out in Geneseo. To add insult to injury, Mike Kavanagh scored his first career goal at 15:06.
Geneseo lost their composure after the fifth Cardinal goal. The Knights were whistled for twenty-four minutes in penalties, including two ten minute misconducts.
Plattsburgh finished the game out shooting Geneseo 37 to 19 in the contest and went 1 for 9 on the power-play.
Bryan Hince made 19 saves in his second straight shutout.
First Star: Bryan Hince
Second Star: Kyle VanderMale
Third Star: Nick Rolls
