Cardinal Hockey Week in Review for week ending 11/10/08

Freshmen Shine at Morrisville

Since the start of the season, freshmen Peter Kaliscik, Kyle Kudroch and Vick Schlueter have skated together. This past Saturday night at Morrisville, this line had a breakout night. Kyle scored twice, Vick scored goal and had an assist, and Peter also had an assist. Coach Emery was impressed by the performance of his freshmen in the game. He told the Press Republican: "Our freshmen needed a game like this," said Plattsburgh State head coach Bob Emery. "It was good for their confidence to let them see how it's done and get some results. Kudroch and Schlueter worked their tails off."

The freshmen forwards where not the only ones getting their first points of the season. Defensemen Mike Kavanagh and Matty MacLeod also found themselves on the score sheet. Mike had two assists and was a +4 on the night. Matty also picked up his first point as a Cardinal and was a +1 on the night.

If anything, the 8-3 win over Morrisville was a great confidence builder for the younger Cardinals.

    He’s Got the Power!

Watch out! Phil Farrow is set for his best season as a Cardinal. Phil has scored three goals so far this season and all of those goals have come on the man-advantage, including the two vs. Morrisville on Saturday night. Phil is proving to be a very dangerous player on the power-play. Keep an eye on #25.

Power-Play is good, Penalty Kill needs to get better.

After four games, Plattsburgh has a power-play that is clicking at an impressive 27%. This is not surprising considering that the Cards return the same power-play units they had last season.

The penalty kill on the other hand needs some work. The Cardinals are killing only 72% of their penalties. Ideally, you would like that number 80% or higher. Mike Baccaro, CJ Tozzo, and TJ Cooper were great penalty killers Cardinals last season, and their graduation has had a noticeable impact on the PK this season so far. Fear not the season is still young and I expect the PK group to improve as the season goes on.
